Can a woman trapped in a loveless union escape without sacrificing her precious grandchild?

Ireland, 1055. In an ancient realm where time weaves a tapestry of love and loss, a woman trapped in a loveless union must find the strength to break free, even if it means sacrificing everything for her precious grandchild. Étaín, forever locked in a youthful facade, lives in perpetual anguish, concealing her pagan long-life magic from her ambitious and malevolent priest-husband. Though her heart yearns to escape his clutches, she cannot abandon her eleven-year-old grandson to his tyranny.

When a kindred spirit, a young and open-minded holy man, enters her life, Étaín is tempted to reveal her perilous truth. Yet, when her jealous husband discovers their connection and unleashes a storm of violence, she makes a fateful decision. Entrusting her beloved grandson to the care of her newfound ally, she flees under the cloak of night.

Alone and consumed by despair, Étaín embarks on a race against time, seeking to pass on her ancient legacy before her ethereal existence fades into the annals of history.

an interesting take

not quite what I had heard as a child, but this is a nice retelling of the story and an admonition to never tick off your stepmother :-)

Deeply Moving, Great Story Telling

Misfortune of Time expresses a rich story, with both historical elements for early Christian Ireland, and a deep, moving story of a woman.Etain is a survivor, having lived many lifetimes. Yet she cannot escape the world in which she lives, the gender roles and the “rights” granted to others which shackle her.The abuse is very real, and she has to do whatever possible to endure.Wonderful, well-written characters and a world of history and magic.

The legacy is given!

Etain has lived lifetimes upon lifetimes as a holder of her family heirloom. The life of most women, young or old, during the turn of the first millennium was filled with abuse and degradation. Etain is no different but having the power of the brooch adds the additional danger of being judged a witch or demon if she is exposed. Safety means running when she can no longer hide and that means losing family and friends each time. A time will come when running is no longer possible. This is a fantastic series. I almost feel like I should read the books in reverse order since each builds a deeper view of the past but the order feels right as each piece is revealed. Christy Jackson Nicholas has crafted the most magnificent description of Queen Medb’s Court I have ever read. It is incredible! I received an advance copy but my review is honest and voluntary.

Engaging

This is my second book in the series, but can easily be read as a standalone. What I really enjoyed about this book- and this series as a whole- is the way fantasy elements are woven into detailed, accurate historical fiction. The book does a great job of transporting you to the 11thC and has a fascinating cast of characters- some you will love and others you will love to hate. Recommended for both fantasy and historical fans.
